Gratitude for this flower spent - and coming up in 2011

Beloveds,

As 2010 draws to an end, I reflect on the year past, and share with you my dreams for the year to come. This year past was a powerful leap in awareness and action for many of us. I spent 7 weeks teaching in the UK and the US, co-hosted the 2nd Annual African Conference for Sexuality and Consciousness Educators and co-taught on two powerful international training programs.

The Conference

The conference was a powerful and deeply moving event. Many students of the Advait Tantraschool were there. So many expressed wonderment to me that they could have even considered not coming. I highly recommend that you plan on coming next year, whether you are a practitioner or not. The presenters came from Africa, Nieu Zealand, Australia, America, the UK and Europe. They represented a wide array of professions. The quality of the presentations was outstanding. There was a depth of soul and experience at the conference that is highly unusual for any event of this kind.

My presentation at the conference was called Darkly Delicious: The Tantric Use of Shadow States. It is a reflection on some of the key learning that this year brought me. For your benefit, I have written it up: see http://www.blog.shakti.co.za/2010/12/darkly-delicious-tantric-use-of-shadow.html

Exciting news is that youtube clips of some presentations will appear on sexualityconsciousness.com (the website for this conference) early in the new year. You will find links to some powerful presentations from last year on this site as well.

Blissdance Celebration
21 - 23 January 2011
Bodhi Khaya, Stanford

I am delighted to announce our first BlissDance celebration weekend away. Imagine a whole weekend - Friday evening to Sunday afternoon - filled with the delight of dance and our company shared. Imagine starting the year in deep, blissful contact with your own body, exploring the dance that wants to unfold in you in this year coming. Imagine feeling your connection with the flow of love through all of us one weekend long dance, interspersed by Tantric meditations, sensual meals together and much loving. The time has come to dance beloveds!

About BlissDance

Bliss
is the balance that happens
When we fully embrace
Both our shadow and our light
And come to rest
In love

Blissdance is an expression of Tantra, the art of integrating the sacred and sexual, and using this as a force for awakening. In a Blissdance session, you explore your inner and outer worlds through movement and stillness, music and silence. The dance is free and not stylized, though guided by me through the progression of a theme. I introduce the dance, show you how I interpret it, and then you find our own response.

Blissdance draws on the wisdom of Biodanza and various other dance, movement and meditation traditions.

One of the first principles of Tantra is presence – being present in the here and now, in your body, in your senses. Another is the connection between our passion, our sexuality and our hearts. Blissdance is a space where you can come rest into the simple beauty of moving in a body, with other bodies, in the dance of life.

As this happens, you get to experience and confront some of the patterns that keep us from being intimate with life:

Body armoring: We hold our bodies rigid in an attempt to protect ourselves from feeling too much - or feeling what we have been suppressing. Sometimes that is laughter or ecstasy, sometimes that is sadness. fear or anger. All these states are welcome in the dance.

Associations: Over a lifetime of suppessions, we have started to build up meaning through associations. When someone touches you, what does it mean to you? When you enjoy the touch, what fears come up? Do they relate to past experiences or future projections? In BlissDance, these subconscious processes will become conscious for you. In awareness lies the liberation.

One of the keys of BlissDance is that the dance moves you out of your habits and stuck ways. We act out some of the drama's of everyday life - like having a couple's fight - but do that in a conscious way, as a celebration of the body, and as an act of freedom. In doing that, something gives way, more space gets created, and we can celebrate our freedom more. Sometimes I use ancient shamanic techniques to help shake up the nervous system so that you can slip into this moment with no mind. Sometimes we dance wild and crazy with little structure and limitation, to let that energy be expressed and accessed in the body. Eventually, as Rumi says:

something opens up
I taste only sacredness

The moment softens. We get to feel everything intimately. We welcome what is, no longer resist, and in that we can meet the beloved, in the dance, in this moment. In the first place, that beloved is my very own being. Then I can meet him/her in the other, the group, my life, existence.

BlissDance is for those who are yearning for presence, freedom and truth. It is for the brave spiritual warriors who are not scared to dance their ridiculousness and to let their vulnerability be felt in the dance as well.

All it takes is a little willingness. The music, the facilitation and the group will carry you along into what you really want: A deep opening into this present precious moment.

Dolphin Love

Tantric Dolphin Retreat

by Shakti Malan

10 – 13 March 2011, (extra night optional)

Ponta Malangane, Mozambique

Dolphins

I believe that dolphins have come to earth as an embodiment of unconditional love. They celebrate their desire in continuous, finely attuned sensual flow. They flow in and out of the ocean's changing rhythms with playful delight. They love without limits. And they make love, a lot.

It is my encounter with the bottle nose dolphins of Southern Mozambique that lead me, ten years ago, to the path of Tantra. Swimming with them at the bottom of the bright ocean, I felt like I never had to come up for air again. I got immersed in the power of love. Swimming in love, who ever needs to breathe air again? Their sound traveling through the waters of my body changed my resonance so profoundly that I had no choice, really. I left behind a life and opened to the work I was called for: Sharing the wisdom of Tantra

Tantra is an ancient mystery tradition that regards the body and embodied, sensual love as a gateway to awakening. Tantrikas share this understanding with dolphins. Therefore I find it very fitting to have a Tantric Dolphin Retreat at Ponta Malangane, ten years after my first encounter.

Halo Gaia is a company, lead by Courtney Ward, that approaches the dolphins with such love and skill that it never feels like an imposition to swim with them. If the dolphins want to swim with us, we will. If they are busy, we won't interfere. Either way, you will love the experience.

Dolphin Love Retreat

In this retreat, we will explore the following dimensions of dolphin reality.

1. Conscious breathing

Every breath that a dolphin takes, is consciously chosen. If a dolphin gets anethesized, the chances are that (s)he may die. Even while sleeping, dolphins have half their brain functioning, enabling them to keep consciously choosing their breath. Breath is prana, life force. The breath is the first caress that enters us, the first experience of being loved from deep inside. Imagine what it could be like if you could learn to open to your own breath as a touch of the Beloved, Existence, all that is. Imagine being able to share such presence with another. On this retreat, I will teach you how. And we will take this presence with us to the dolphins.

2. Love embodied

As human beings, our ability to love ourselves and to love others is often constricted by our unconscious fears, associations and repressions. Dolphins invite us to rediscover the real of pure, innocent love, met and celebrated in the body.

3. Feeling the flow

Our ability to flow in life gets inhibited by the body armoring we carry around us. Body armoring is emotional protection
that makes us numb or defended against the touch of another. While in some situations, such as in a business meeting, this armoring may serve us, too many of us walk around with permanent armoring, which limits our ability to feel the real of the moment, the touch of life. Dolphins live in the constantly changing flow of life. With some facilitated preparation, we can go meet them in the oceans, armored only with the power of the open heart.

4. Open to desire

I have personally witnessed numerous encounters of dolphins coming to meet humans without judgment, and with a fine attunement as to what each person needs. Despite their unconditionality, dolphins never do anything that does not flow from their own authentic desire. I will invite you on this retreat to open to yours.

What will we be doing?

  • conscious breath work
  • guided meditations using breath, sound and movement
  • blissdance and other movement meditations
  • conscious work with kundalini, our sexual energy or vital life force

Who is the retreat for?

This retreat is suitable for all committed seekers whose greatest desire it is to wake up to the fullness of love, or the truth of who we really are. This journey takes courage, the courage to leave behind what is no longer true, and to meet love in unexpected ways. If you are a spiritual warrior with a strong heart and the willingness to face your unconscious fears, then come. Though we will be working with the energy of sexuality, there will be nothing overt about the retreat, and we will remain fully clothed for this occasion. Our hearts, however, may dance in the naked oceans.

You are welcome to come as an individual or with a partner.
Some exercises are done with one or two other people. We rotate practice partners with great respect and honoring for where your energy is at.

Breath of Life Breath of Love
Breathwork and Tantra Retreat

Dan Brulé and Shakti Malan
1 - 6 April 2011
Blue Butterfly, Tulbach
, South Africa

The Retreat

There are two energies running through your body that can profoundly transform your access to life and love:
  • Breath, prana or Chi; and
  • Kundalini, or sexual energy

Join us in April for an extraordinary opportunity to work with two internationally known teachers, Shakti Malan, dakini or teacher of the art of sacred sexuality, and Dan Brulé, teacher of breathwork

We have put aside five days for you to immerse yourself in the beauty and perfection of your own being, facilitated by the opening of your breath and your sexual energy.

There will be two main components to our work:

1. Releasing and reintegrating energy from the unconscious

From the moment of our conception, human beings can encounter experiences that feel traumatic or overwhelming. As little ones, we simply do not have the capacity to deal with the intensity of some life experiences, and so we suppress what we cannot cope with. Later in life, suppressing, denying and controlling becomes a way of living. We live our lives protected by body armoring that keeps us from feeling the full impact of the moment.

But there comes a time when we are ready live life fully. At this point, it is time to feel what has been suppressed before, and to let what is hidden away in the unconscious be integrated back into the fullness of our energy bodies.

During this retreat, there will be collective and individual opportunities for you to release trauma and integrate experiences that have been suppressed and that inhibit the flow of your life force. Dan and Shakti will guide you through the use of loving, conscious breathwork and facilitated nervous system re-patterning to help you reclaim the life force that is rightfully yours.

2. Immersion in pure presence

When we stop denying and suppressing, there is more space in us for pure awareness and simple presence.

The question that your sexual energy presents is: How much ecstasy or bliss can you tolerate? The question that the breath asks you is: how deeply are you willing to open and feel in this moment?

Are you ready for the ride of your life?
Are you ready to be alive, total and expanded like never before?

Then come, beloveds… Come take this opportunity to open more to the flow of your own pure life force.

Say yes to life
Say yes to love
The breath will help to take you there

About Breathwork

Breathwork is the use of breath awareness and conscious breathing exercises, techniques and meditations meant to clear your head, settle your stomach, calm your nerves, and open your heart. We use the breath as a bridge, a force and a tool for health, growth and change in spirit, mind and body. Our style of breathwork is called Spiritual Breathing. It engages every level of your being in the simple natural moment to moment process of breathing. As you become more conscious of your breathing, you become more conscious in general. As you become more aware of your breath, you become more aware, period. Awareness is the key to liberation!

About Tantra

Tantra is an ancient mystery tradition that regards all aspects of our experience, including our sexuality, as a gateway to our awakening. Only when a meditator or a monk was deemed ready by his master would he be introduced to the secret practices of Tantra. When the celibate monk got introduced to the Dakini, a woman who embodies the sacred power of female sexuality, this confrontation with taboo would instantly shatter his spiritual ego and give him an opportunity right there to wake up. She would then initiate him into the sacred sexual mystery practices.

The world is ready to wake up, and is waiting for seekers like you who are willing to face your deepest desires and fears. As a leader of the Advait Tantra school, Shakti has adapted the mystery practices to be accessible for the modern world. It is possible to encounter the touch of the Dakini without any nakedness or even physical touch being required. As we learn to open to the flow of breath, sensuality and kundalini in our own bodies, this energy starts to emanate from us, to bless, uplift, and awaken whoever we meet.

Breath and Tantra coming together

Imagine taking this beautiful awareness of the breath into your relationships. Imagine consciously breathing with your beloved. Imagine making your sexual intimate life a space for awakening to happen, through the breath. This is what we will be extending the breath work into this time.

Expect naked hearts rather than naked bodies.

Expect people breathing together in loving support, rather than any overt sexual activity.

Expect a deep embracing of yourself, and a dropping of the false protections that keep us from being able to meet another in truth.

Expect to discover more about your essential impulse rather than pressure to participate in experiences you are not comfortable with.

I have found that many seekers of truth have done deep work in all areas of their lives except their sexuality. And yet our sexuality is such a potent gateway to consciousness!

What if we could use this tremendous power of the breath to break through into deep, unconditional loving?

Retreat Methods

Group and individual breathwork sessions
Group and individual tantric release sessions
Dance, yoga and chi kung
Active meditations using sound, breath and movement
Tantric breath exercises for individuals and couples

About Shakti Malan

Shakti Malan

Shakti is a dakini (teacher of the mystery traditions of Tantra) and member of the Advait Tantraschool (tantraschool.co.za). She has a busy practice involving sessions, workshops, courses and retreats. Shakti is based in Cape Town and has been teaching internationally in the UK and the US. Her central approach is to enter the totality of experience as a gateway to awakening. Shakti believes that sexuality is the field which most powerfully directs us to this gateway. For more on her work, see shakti.co.za and totalitytherapy.com

Shakti is a woman who has always had a deep sense of calling, which first she explored in the development field working with township communities all across South Africa. Through this work she attained a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology, a discipline that teaches the practitioner to listen to the reality of groups and individuals from an insider perspective, through immersion in the texture of their lives.

Following from many years of devotion to meditation, tai chi, yoga and shamanic work, Shakti had a sudden and profound redirection of her energy into the field of Tantra. This started at the age of 33 with 18 months of death processing in the wilderness, and then a long period of intense work with the Advaita tradition of non-duality, as well as deep personal emotional processing.

Her style of teaching is influenced by Advaita teachings in general and specifically Advait Tantra, shamanism (most poignantly African shamanic traditions), systemic and processwork psychology, her intellectual training as a Social Anthropologist and also her work as a dance and movement teacher.
