Cape Town Tantra News

Hello beloveds

Three delicious events coming up in April before I leave - and they are all in or close to your home town! Please tell friends, and come! Here's a summary, scroll down to get details.

  • This weekend coming, the last of the Breathwork events with Dan and me. I am so delighted to have had an opportunity to share this work with you - it has been deeply transformational for many. Don't miss this opportunity. If you can only come for one day, you are welcome - cost R1 200 for the day. This is what participants of our five day Breathwork and Tantra event had to say: "Delicious, breath taking and quite simply beautiful. A real opportunity to dive in, breathe and find my divine Feminine. I am unbelievably grateful that I was able to be part of this course. Thank you both!" and "Dan carries his wealth of knowledge and experience in his gentle presence while Shakti stands sensual witness to your Becoming as you expand the edges of your experience of life. Together they act as the waves and waters guiding your boat to new shores."

  • On the morning of Easter Friday, Kundalini Yoga teacher Patwant and myself are running a Kundalini workshop in Hout Bay - how cool is that? This is going to be like Easter bunnies for breakfast in terms of the body's delight levels.
  • Then end of the month, it is time for that long awaited Skydancing retreat for women. There are only a couple of places left for this one.

On 4 May I am off to the UK, then the States and then the USSR - back mid/end August only. If you planned to still fit in a session with me before, let me know soon.
BlissDance will continue on Wednesday nights 7.45pm at the Kalk Bay Community Hall - Stephen will take over when I leave.

Intimate Breath
Dan Brulé and Shakti Malan
Phakalane, Cape Town
16 and 17 April 2011 9am - 5pm each day Cost R2 100

The breath is the most intimate touch of existence. This first beloved caresses us from the inside, all the time, and yet we hardly notice its presence. Most of us have hardly begun to explore the power of the breath as a tool to deepen our intimacy with ourselves, with another and with existence as such. There is so much more capacity for aliveness in us, right here in our bodies - if we open up more deeply to the breath.

In this workshop, we will bring together the best of two mystery traditions - Tantra and Breathwork - to assist you in opening to the wonder that is right inside you.

On this workshop, you will discover how to
  • breathe more deeply into different dimensions of your body
  • open to the sensual, rhythmic flow of the breath
  • drop beyond the mind, into the mind blowing transformational power of the breath
  • share breathwork with a partner through tantric meditations
  • bring the power of the breath more strongly into your moving, dancing active life
Powerful physical, emotional and psychological healing happens spontaneously as a result of spiritual breathing. When we awaken to the energy within us, we merge with the energy around us - and vice versa. When we melt into the energy that surrounds us, we fall into the energy that is at our core...

The surface area of our lungs: if we were to stretch it pout and measure it - it would fill one side of a tennis court! That we means more of the world comes into intimate contact with us
with each breath - more than we could possibly touch with our hands or wrap our arms around.

And when we breathe... the essence of who we are flows out into the world to mix and merge with everyone and everything. It is lovely to hold a philosophy about oneness, connection, etc.
it is quite another to have a direct biological, an unmistakable cellular experience of divine energy!

About Shakti Malan

Shakti is a dakini (teacher of the mystery traditions of Tantra) and member of the Advait Tantraschool (tantraschool.co.za). She has a busy practice involving sessions, workshops, courses and retreats. Shakti is based in Cape Town and has been teaching internationally in the UK and the US. Her central approach is to enter the totality of experience as a gateway to awakening. Shakti believes that sexuality is the field which most powerfully directs us to this gateway. For more on her work, see shakti.co.za and totalitytherapy.com

Shakti is a woman who has always had a deep sense of calling, which first she explored in the development field working with township communities all across South Africa. Through this work she attained a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology, a discipline that teaches the practitioner to listen to the reality of groups and individuals from an insider perspective, through immersion in the texture of their lives.

Following from many years of devotion to meditation, tai chi, yoga and shamanic work, Shakti had a sudden and profound redirection of her energy into the field of Tantra. This started at the age of 33 with 18 months of death processing in the wilderness, and then a long period of intense work with the Advaita tradition of non-duality, as well as deep personal emotional processing.

Her style of teaching is influenced by Advaita teachings in general and specifically Advait Tantra, shamanism (most poignantly African shamanic traditions), systemic and processwork psychology, her intellectual training as a Social Anthropologist and also her work as a dance and movement teacher.

Wild Women Skydancing

A Women's Tantra Retreat
29 April - 2 May 2011
n!au ma farm, Little Karoo

On female sexual energy

Sexual energy is a tremendous source of vitality and life force. When we own and live our sexual energy, we incarnate – we come to embody the goddess within. We wake up to the moment. Through our sexual flow as women, the worlds are birthed. And yet this potential lies dormant in so many of us. The snake, the kundalini, the origin of our embodied vitality, is there, at the base of the spine, but it slumbers, and it rarely gets touched.Until the wild woman in us wakes up to who she really is.

Skydancing

Tantra is a deep celebration of the power of the feminine. In Tibet, female practitioner of Tantra is called a Dakini - a skydancer. Skydancing is what happens when a woman's sexual energy starts to move up her body, though her heart and comes showering out the crown of her head. The whole body goes into an exquisite dance that happens in receptivity and relaxation.
Shakti, a practiced Dakini, invites you to come taste with us the nectar of the feminine that flows from skydancing. In this workshop, I will assist you to
  • direct the flow of energy in your body through meditation, movement and breath work
  • share the ecstasy and depth of the feminine with other women in dancing, chanting and story circles and
  • find your own skydance as it is in the naked truth of your being, this moment.

Skydancing is a deeply authentic expression of the wild woman in all of us. This teaching from woman to woman takes some doing in our current western mind set. Women have been brought up to believe that most or all of their sexual expression is wrong and must only be presented in an acceptable way according to the culture. Skydancing invites a great unlearning. In this unlearning our true being begins to emerge and we dance again. It happens when we let go, and allow what wants to dance through us.

In my work with Tantra, an ancient eastern tradition that follows sexual energy as a doorway to consciousness, I have learnt that sexual awakening is linked to the opening of the chakras or "energy wheels" (represented by the spirals on the front page image). When the opening of the chakras happens in the body, it literally feels like an energy snake that uncoils at the base of the body and rises up through the crown of the head. For me personally, this rising brings a soft ecstasy that ripples onto the farthest shores of my life… It also brings a deep contentment with existence.

Sexual energy becomes illuminated when the repressions that block us at each of the chakras or energy points in the body are lifted. These repressions are the result of our conditioning, our patterning and the scars that are left by our life experiences. I believe that it is possible to bring our repressions to awareness and release them by working in a sacred circle of women.

What happens on the retreat

My focus is on the awakening of consciousness, not on teaching technique or improving performance (though these things follow of their own accord). I use the following methods to evoke awareness:

  • We process body memories through acting and embodiment.
  • We deepen awareness of female sexuality through breath work and other Tantric techniques.
  • We reflect on our stories and vision our "this-here-now" realities through creating with the earth and writing.
  • We meditate and do guided visualizations to deepen our awareness of essence flowing through us.
  • We use sound, chanting, movements and dancing focused on a particular expression of our sexual energy to awaken the body to its inherent knowing.
  • We have strong interactions with nature and the elements to reconnect us to our being-of-the-earth, the origin of our sexual energy.
