Tantra News January 2012

Beloveds,

On this the first day of 2012, I write to you from Rishikesh on the holy river Ganga. Songs of devotion mingle with the horns and hoots of motorbikes pushing their way over the swinging bridge over this broad river. I am contemplating the meeting of Shakti and Shiva, the feminine and masculine principles of existence. In my being, I feel a deepening open and surrender to the mystery, like a soft rose allowing the sun to perfume the air with the rich fragrance of her being. And I feel the call of Shiva, the deep stillness and penetrating presence of the masculine. Soon I will be entering into a 16 day silent retreat with my partner Aaron, immersing myself in the practice of meditation. Today, however, we make love, and I feel the profound meditation of presence that is there in giving myself so deeply, intimately, and fully to this moment, and this love.

This feels like a year with so much potential for deepening and expansion of awareness. I am very excited to be sharing with you this March, with Aaron, the beautiful journey of discovering how man and woman can move to our deepest essence, and support each other to that - in love, sex and in life. See Man and Woman Awake below.

In March also, an opportunity to immerse in the oceans of life in Tantric practice, with the dolphins - really really!  This retreat is very popular so book soon with Halo Gaia if you want to come. This journey of exploring the waters will continue 4 - 7 May when Dan Brule and I will be running a water rebirthing and water bliss retreat in Cape Town - more on this in the next month.

I am delighted to be offering another Wild Woman Skydancing retreat in the Little Karoo this March. Last year, the retreat was booked to full capacity, and the journey with the women was exquisite, wild, and deeply transformative. Come, if you haven't yet, and come again if your heart calls!

Then my other big project of the year - the 14 months Totality Therapy online training programme, which allows students from across the world to do a systematic, ongoing immersion in practice with me.

Oh, and then, I almost forget! A delicious new offering. Tantric Bliss in Morocco beloveds!  On the beach, at an exotic new destination, with an international group of participants. See the advert below and the link. There is an opportunity to stay on another five days for those who want to explore this magical country.

This year, 2012, is a profound turning point in our capacity for awakening as humanity. May it be so in your bodies, hearts and souls beloveds.

Namaste

Waking up to Bliss

A Wild Dolphin Retreat with Shakti Malan and Courtney Ward

Thursday 1st - Sunday 4th March 2012

The year 2012 is a time of celebration for those of us who have chosen to dedicate our lives to waking up spiritually. We have been working hard at clearing, and now it is time to surrender into Bliss. Come drop into the joyful support of the dolphins, and open to what they have to share through the wise practices of Tantra. Tantra is an ancient mystery tradition that focuses on awakening, this lifetime, through total immersion in presence in every aspect of our lives, including our sexuality.

On this retreat you will
• Experience the dropping of body armoring so that you can open to the bliss of this moment
• Learn to use the breath as an instrument of deep pleasure and bliss
• Come home into your own blissful, sexually ecstatic body
• Open to the flow of awakened life force, or kundalini, in your life

Your facilitators:

Shakti

Shakti is a Tantra teacher or dakini and member of the Advait Tantraschool (tantraschool.co.za). She does sessions, workshops, courses and retreats in South Africa and across the world. Her central approach is to enter the totality of experience as a gateway to awakening. Shakti believes that sexuality is the field which most powerfully directs us to this gateway. For more on her work, see www.shakti.co.za and www.totalitytherapy.com

Shakti is well loved as a group work facilitator because of her ability to sense and respond to the spirit of the group. This skill comes from her academic training (Ph.D. in Social Anthropology), her immersion in shamanic psychology (specifically process work psychology) and the somatic/kinaesthetic awareness she has developed as a dakini. Shakti developed a dance form called BlissDance which she uses in her teaching. The awakening of Spirit in the Body in her work happens as we release body armoring and become more and more aware of subtle sensory experience. In her personal journey, Shakti has been profoundly affected by the dolphins, and she works in deep resonance with them.

Courtney Ward

Courtney Ward 'Essentially a performer in the great arts of the divine', Courtney is a talented artist, actor and musician. Wild Women Skydancing
A Women's Tantra Retreat
8 - 11 March 2012

On female sexual energy

Sexual energy is a tremendous source of vitality and life force. When we own and live our sexual energy, we incarnate – we come to embody the goddess within. We wake up to the moment. Through our sexual flow as women, the worlds are birthed. And yet this potential lies dormant in so many of us. The snake, the kundalini, the origin of our embodied vitality, is there, at the base of the spine, but it slumbers, and it rarely gets touched.Until the wild woman in us wakes up to who she really is.

Skydancing

Tantra is a deep celebration of the power of the feminine. In Tibet, female practitioner of Tantra is called a Dakini - a skydancer. Skydancing is what happens when a woman's sexual energy starts to move up her body, though her heart and comes showering out the crown of her head. The whole body goes into an exquisite dance that happens in receptivity and relaxation.
Shakti, a practiced Dakini, invites you to come taste with us the nectar of the feminine that flows from skydancing. In this workshop, I will assist you to
  • direct the flow of energy in your body through meditation, movement and breath work
  • share the ecstasy and depth of the feminine with other women in dancing, chanting and story circles and
  • find your own skydance as it is in the naked truth of your being, this moment.

Skydancing is a deeply authentic expression of the wild woman in all of us. This teaching from woman to woman takes some doing in our current western mind set. Women have been brought up to believe that most or all of their sexual expression is wrong and must only be presented in an acceptable way according to the culture. Skydancing invites a great unlearning. In this unlearning our true being begins to emerge and we dance again. It happens when we let go, and allow what wants to dance through us.

In my work with Tantra, an ancient eastern tradition that follows sexual energy as a doorway to consciousness, I have learnt that sexual awakening is linked to the opening of the chakras or "energy wheels" (represented by the spirals on the front page image). When the opening of the chakras happens in the body, it literally feels like an energy snake that uncoils at the base of the body and rises up through the crown of the head. For me personally, this rising brings a soft ecstasy that ripples onto the farthest shores of my life… It also brings a deep contentment with existence.

Sexual energy becomes illuminated when the repressions that block us at each of the chakras or energy points in the body are lifted. These repressions are the result of our conditioning, our patterning and the scars that are left by our life experiences. I believe that it is possible to bring our repressions to awareness and release them by working in a sacred circle of women.

What happens on the retreat

My focus is on the awakening of consciousness, not on teaching technique or improving performance (though these things follow of their own accord). I use the following methods to evoke awareness:

  • We process body memories through acting and embodiment.
  • We deepen awareness of female sexuality through breath work and other Tantric techniques.
  • We reflect on our stories and vision our "this-here-now" realities through creating with the earth and writing.
  • We meditate and do guided visualizations to deepen our awareness of essence flowing through us.
  • We use sound, chanting, movements and dancing focused on a particular expression of our sexual energy to awaken the body to its inherent knowing.
  • We have strong interactions with nature and the elements to reconnect us to our being-of-the-earth, the origin of our sexual energy.

Man and Woman Awake
Tantra Intensive Retreat
with Shakti Malan and Aaron Swanson

21 (public holiday) - 25 March 2012

Illovo, KZN

This Retreat

The meeting and merging of masculine and feminine is a primary objective of Tantric practice. In human evolution, the year 2012 signals the time when the inner marriage between masculine and feminine becomes more available to us - and the imperative is strong for us to use the opportunity. When masculine and feminine merge, we awake to the truth of who we really are - the Beloved as such. On the way there, it is important for Man to open to fully embodying the Masculine, and for Woman to embody the Feminine. Once this has happened, we can open to the other, and start dancing with the Soulmate Within.

The feminine, as represented in Tantra by Shakti, is not afraid of the dark underworld. She creates the world of illusions. She is comfortable exploring and integrating what is in the unconscious. She explores dark eros and finds the gifts in those corners of existence that have been shunned. She smells, drinks, feels, hears, tastes. She receives the mystery and opens to that which is beyond the known.

The masculine, as represented in Tantra by Shiva, holds one pointed focus and stillness. Shiva sits in deep meditation on Mount Khailash, and is undisturbed by the movement of the elements around him. His quality is presence, and when he acts, he does so with skillful means. His attitude to the feminine is total love and devotion. He is the arrow that enters where the feminine guides and takes the energy upward towards transcendent oneness with all that is.

The Facilitators

You have an opportunity on this retreat to explore the dance of Man and Woman Awakening with two facilitators who have been exploring and living these qualities deeply in their personal Tantric practice.

Shakti is a dakini or teacher of the mysteries of Tantra and member of the Advait Tantraschool (tantraschool.co.za). Shakti is based in Cape Town, South Africa but teaches and practices across the world. Her central approach is to enter the totality of experience as a gateway to awakening. Shakti believes that sexuality is the field which most powerfully directs us to this gateway. For more on her work, see www.shakti.co.za and www.totalitytherapy.com

About Shakti Malan (Ph.D)

Shakti's purpose as Tantric dakini is to facilitate your awakening to the essence of who you really are, while remaining fully functional in your body. Many traditions of enlightenment view the body as that which is to be transcended. Tantra sees the body as a vehicle for awakening. The process of dropping through veils of illusion can be very impactful on our nervous system, and every aspect of our physical and energetic bodies. Because Shakti values the body as the vehicle through which you can share your awakening with the world, she aims to ensure that your energetic and physical bodies are fully prepared for the process of waking up. This requires totality of the seeker - the willingness to have every aspect of your energetic and physical reality be purified by the power of truth. As this happens, conversely, the body becomes capable of sensing and experiencing on increasingly subtle and refined levels. Thus, the physical vessel of the body becomes a suitable instrument to transmit the essence of the awakened state.

Shakti has a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology, a discipline that teaches the practitioner to listen to the reality of groups and individuals from an insider perspective, through immersion in the texture of their lives. She spent many years translating the realities of vulnerable communities to decision makers in government, development organizations and corporates in the fields of poverty management, economic development and environmental management. Shakti's training as dakini comes through the Advaita tradition and many years of immersion in meditation and conscious body practices.

About Aaron Swanson

From his early twenties, Aaron's life has been immersed in the study of Tantra and meditation. He has worked with the Tantric teachings of Bernie Prior, Barry Long, Saniel Bonder and David Deida, as well as Ipsalu Tantra, the intimacy practices of the Realization Process created by Judith Blackstone and the Womb Wisdom work of Padma Aon, exploring specifically these aspects of Tantric practice: Resting in Non Dual stillness, being present as Awareness fully in the body, conducting energy or Shakti throughout the body, and opening the heart and body fully to the mystery of Woman.

Aaron's exploration of consciousness and meditation practices has been through the work of masters such as Anadi, Adyashanti, John DeRuiter and Leslie Temple Thurston, through whose work he has discovered the ever deepening awakening of Pure Awareness beyond Form and its continuing clarification and evolution in the marriage of Spirit and Form within the Non Dual Ground of Being.

Aaron believes that Tantra is a path to embodied wholeness where we have the opportunity to bring the light of Pure Awareness and Divine Love deep into the body where all shadows and incongruencies in ones being must be faced with both the impeccable dedication of Spiritual Warriorship and the Heart of a sensitive Lover. Through the meeting of the Masculine and Feminine we have the opportunity to realize God in the Forms of the World, and support the evolution of our precious World into higher forms of development. It is a path of utter care and devotion that lovingly requires everything

Tantric Bliss
Shakti Malan and Aaron Swanson
a 5 day Tantric experience in Morocco (see leaflet attached)

Tantra

Tantra is a mystery tradition that uses sexual energy as a force for spiritual awakening. The question  that Tantra asks of the seeker is: How much bliss can you stand? Your capacity for bliss increases as your capacity to feel everything else - every sensation and emotion - increases. Come join two experienced Tantrikas for an adventure in exploring your inner wildness - to expand your capacity for feeling all of life. This delightful inner journey will be seamlessly interwoven with an exploration of the outer landscapes of Morocco - land of magic and beauty.

Methods

We will spend four hours every day - two hours at the start of the day and two hours at the end for the day - gently immersing you in the delicious practices of Tantra. Specifically, these will involve
tantric solo and partner meditations using breath, sound and movement
tantric breathwork
introducing masculine and feminine sexual energy
techniques for deep opening and relaxation and
blissdance

When we drop deep into the center of presence, every cell of our bodies gets infused with the eros of life. We smell the ambroisia of being. When we open to the full aliveness of our bodies, stillness arises of itself.

About BlissDance
Bliss
is the balance that happens
When we fully embrace
Both our shadow and our light
And come to rest
In love

Blissdance is an expression of Tantra, the art of integrating the sacred and sexual, and using this as a force for awakening. In a Blissdance session, you explore your inner and outer worlds through movement and stillness, music and silence. The dance is free and not stylized, though guided by me through the progression of a theme. I introduce the dance, show you how I interpret it, and then you find our own response.

Blissdance draws on the wisdom of Biodanza and various other dance, movement and meditation traditions.

One of the first principles of Tantra is presence – being present in the here and now, in your body, in your senses. Another is the connection between our passion, our sexuality and our hearts. Blissdance is a space where you can come rest into the simple beauty of moving in a body, with other bodies, in the dance of life.

As this happens, you get to experience and confront some of the patterns that keep us from being intimate with life:

Body armoring: We hold our bodies rigid in an attempt to protect ourselves from feeling too much - or feeling what we have been suppressing. Sometimes that is laughter or ecstasy, sometimes that is sadness. fear or anger. All these states are welcome in the dance.

Associations: Over a lifetime of suppessions, we have started to build up meaning through associations. When someone touches you, what does it mean to you? When you enjoy the touch, what fears come up? Do they relate to past experiences or future projections? In BlissDance, these subconscious processes will become conscious for you. In awareness lies the liberation.

One of the keys of BlissDance is that the dance moves you out of your habits and stuck ways. We act out some of the drama's of everyday life - like having a couple's fight - but do that in a conscious way, as a celebration of the body, and as an act of freedom. In doing that, something gives way, more space gets created, and we can celebrate our freedom more. Sometimes I use ancient shamanic techniques to help shake up the nervous system so that you can slip into this moment with no mind. Sometimes we dance wild and crazy with little structure and limitation, to let that energy be expressed and accessed in the body. Eventually, as Rumi says:

something opens up
I taste only sacredness

The moment softens. We get to feel everything intimately. We welcome what is, no longer resist, and in that we can meet the beloved, in the dance, in this moment. In the first place, that beloved is my very own being. Then I can meet him/her in the other, the group, my life, existence.

BlissDance is for those who are yearning for presence, freedom and truth. It is for the brave spiritual warriors who are not scared to dance their ridiculousness and to let their vulnerability be felt in the dance as well.

All it takes is a little willingness. The music, the facilitation and the group will carry you along into what you really want: A deep opening into this present precious moment. Here is a video with more details on this event:

What is Totality Therapy?

Please read the full description of this method on the website:

www.totalitytherapy.com

Totality Therapy is a contemporary, streamlined interpretation of the ancient wisdom of Advaita* Tantra. It was developed and is taught by Dr Shakti Malan. Totality Therapy uses the method of total immersion in experience while evoking a strong witness presence within. Through experiencing primary polarities such as fear and desire, good and bad, masculine and feminine with intentional depth and thoroughness, we get to break through the polarized gridlocks of our existing ego structure.

* Advaita means 'that which is beyond duality'. For more on this approach, see my school's websites:www.tantraschool.co.za and www.advaittantra.com.

What is the Totality Therapy Online Course?

The Totality Therapy Online Course is a 14-month global intensive training with Shakti in the art and practice of Totality Therapy. It is important to realize that, apart from the content and experience, this course will connect you with Shakti in a way that you will receive deep inner transmissions from her. The course will be offered to a closed group of students from across the world and will require a commitment to participate from the onset to the completion of the course. Note: The training has a 10-day residential component in California October 2012, which is not required for course completion. There is also a 10-day Sexual Somatics Facilitation Training in May 2013, which will be compulsory for those who want to complete the facilitation training.

Why do the course?

• To do deep and life-changing inner work
• To receive a systematic sharing from Shakti of the professional skills she has developed in Totality Therapy
• To strengthen your skills as an awareness facilitator in any professional field that touches on sexuality
• To receive a transmission of energy and awareness from Shakti as she connects with you though the course

Who is the course for?

Totality Therapy is for people who are serious about waking up - this lifetime. Awakening happens when we live in the full, embodied realization that there is no separate self and that we are essentially one with all of existence. Some traditions would call this the realization of our essential divinity. In Advaita, the awakened state is seen as that which exists beyond perceptions of duality. This course is suitable for any seeker/student, but is especially designed for practitioners/healers who would like to incorporate this method into their professional practice.

Shakti introducing Totality Therapy

short testimonial by a participant

How does it work?

Totality Therapy works as follows:
• The aim is greater awareness and presence, even if the road seems to go into unhappiness, disintegration and apparent madness.
• No expression of the person's being is excluded – all mental, emotional, physical, sexual, subtle energetic and spiritual facets are met directly as they present themselves.
• The practitioner is involved with her whole being while maintaining a state of heightened awareness. Thus no boundaries are needed and the client is encouraged to embody his/her life with totality. Practitioners are taught how to meet clients from a place of core presence and receptivity that will impeccably guide their interactions with clients.

Focus on sexuality

Totality Therapy focuses on sexuality because sexuality is a potent and mystical force for awakening. Specifically:
• Eros is a guide into the unconscious
• Sexual energy powerfully awakens our life force
• Sexuality can immerse us in-the-moment with pure presence

Course Themes

In this course we will explore in-depth the seven basic methods of Totality Therapy:
1. Lifting taboos and suppressions (facing fears) through

• Exploring your own sexual boundaries
• Touching cellular memories
2. Embracing fantasies and desires through
• Articulating fantasies and desires
• Experiencing what has been desired
3. Integrating polarities through
• Processing polarized ego states
• Developing a witness
4. Expanding heart capacity through
• Experiencing and venting emotions
• Opening the heart
5. Developing presence in the body through
• Breath awareness
• Sensory awareness
• Nervous system re-patterning
6. Male-female integration through
• Identifying the inner relationship
• Clearing external relationships
7. Meditation in the moment through
• Tantric meditation practice
• Sexual experience

Course structure

The structure of this course is wavelike; that is, the unfolding is lateral rather than linear. The wave of the structure has three elements:

Initiating/catalyzing: The work starts with evoking and integrating desires and fears that are in our unconscious. These shadow or unconscious parts of ourselves need to be brought into awareness. We do this in Totality Therapy through exploring your eroticism, your relationship to taboo, and through masculine-feminine projection work.

Processing: Once unconscious material has been evoked, you will need support in processing and integrating the states that arise. You will be taught ways of opening your being deeply to feelings and sensations, keeping your heart open while in the midst of intense experiences such as loneliness and/or depression, and then integrating the polarized states that otherwise keep our ego structures contracted in fear.

Presence: The processing of unconscious material results in the dropping of veils and a deepened capacity to be simply present in the mystery of this moment. This is like riding the crest of the wave. You will be guided in developing an attitude of pure presence and meditative mindfulness in every aspect of your life. Totality therapy approaches presence as an integrated practice which remains even when we are immersed in intense experience, such as during lovemaking or while experiencing fear or grief.

This is an experiential course

This is an experiential rather than a theoretical course. You will benefit from the course to the degree that you participate, do the exercises and open to the experiences that life brings you. By doing this course, you are making a massive statement to existence that you are ready to wake up, and so your life is bound to become an accelerated curriculum. The course itself will give you the support and framework to use what happens in your life for your awakening.

Course format

The Totality Therapy Online course will include the following elements:

1. Bi-monthly lessons containing
• thematic content
• assignments for the following two weeks
• audio or video footage where appropriate

2. Interactive web-based chat room for students to share their experience of homework. Students will be required to write essays and respond to each other's work. Shakti will actively contribute to and facilitate this online discussion by giving feedback to student entries in the chat room.

3. Monthly one hour tele-seminar for the group that will be recorded and available as an archived resource.

4. An optional ten day residential retreat in California October 2012 (which will have a separate cost from the course) - compulsory for those who want to complete the facilitation training

5. An optional ten day Sexual Somatics Facilitation Training in May 2013 (which will have a separate cost from the course), - compulsory for those who want to complete the facilitation training

5. Four (4) 60-minute individual Skype sessions with Shakti over the course of the 14 months(additional sessions can be booked at extra cost).

6. Buddy support and work group support in cities with several participants

b) bringing a specific quality of attention/focus to your life (e.g. noticing and processing polarities that arise)
c) active meditations to integrate awareness in the body

You will also be committing to doing homework essays, regular communication with your buddies and work group (where relevant) participating in the group teleseminar and the chat room discussions (at least one response to the work of others every two weeks).

For practitioners

Practitioners who want to apprentice with Shakti have the option of one-to-one or Skype based mentorship to build their professional skills in this work.

Requirement for completion of apprenticeship:
• Attending both the 10 day Totality Therapy Intensive and the 10 day Sexual Somatic Facilitation Training
• One hundred hours of case studies documented
• Thirty case studies discussed over 10 - 20 Skype or person-to-person sessions with Shakti. Cost: $300/200 pounds/R1 500 per two hour session

Qualification and certification

Students who complete the course will be given a certificate of course completion. To qualify for course completion recognition, students need to have participated in at least 80 % of the activities (chat room discussions, buddy exchanges, homework essays, Skype sessions and teleseminars). Although the residential retreat and facilitation training retreats will not be compulsory for course completion, it is highly recommended, and it is compulsory for those who wish to do the apprenticeship program.

Practitioners who complete the apprenticeship will be given a certificate in recognition of apprenticeship.

In the interest of excellence, Shakti maintains the right to terminate participation in the course and the apprenticeship where students do not display sufficient commitment, readiness or aptitude.

Please note that Shakti's training is not accredited with any official institution. This affords the work the freedom to express its totality without being regulated by the culture.

The aim of the Totality Training Online Course and Apprenticeship is to take you deeper into the living and expressing of who you are in whatever ways that expresses. It is not meant to bestow on you a title or external authority, but rather to deepen the inner authority of your being to live your unique gifts to the world. We share with the world who we are, not what we do or profess to be capable of.
